Directed Self-Motivation

When it comes to being motivated at work, when it comes to finding direction, who would you say is responsible for initiating. If you think it is your Manager, please lookup the definition and job description of a manager.

At your place of employment, most of the time, it is your Leaders who are responsible for motivating the employees both a group and as an individual. Good leaders know how to use the various needs and resources necessary for making accurate and sound decisions. But Leaders understand, unless under strenuous circumstances, leading is a two way street. A Leader will provide a path of communication to those he or she is trying to motivate. A Leader will also need to know how to properly solicit positive feedback to assist in making better decisions in the future. For a Leader, this is how influence and power is developed and respect and authority is earned.

As a Leader, he or she understands what their function is in the motivational process. They understand they motivate while providing direction depending on the goals at hand. You can say they motivate to direct. This can be long term or short term motivational direction. But when you leave your workplace, does your Leader follow you home? Do they go to the places where you enjoy hanging out. The answer is probably no. Most of you probably do not even interact with your leader on a daily basis. Do not mistake your Manager for a leader, even though they both work toward very similar goals, they are not the same. Many of you work with your Manager on a daily basis but not your Leader.

Draining Away

But when it comes to motivation and post-work hours, a majority of you leave whatever is left of your motivation at work. You go home, spend all that time commuting, cook dinner, take care of the children, maybe talk with your spouse or companion, attempt to watch TV and get ready for work the next day. Yes, I do understand all of this takes motivation and many of you pray for the strength to get you through the day. But the motivation I am talking about here relates to drive and desire.

Look at the daily routine you have when you leave work. Do you have a desire or drive to do anything else. When was the last time you decided to go off the beaten track and stop elsewhere to enjoy your day instead of running home when you don't have anything pressing matters to attend. Have you realized how complacent you have become to the daily routines of life.

Comfort Zone

Most of us just love the comfort zone, once we are in, we normally don't want to get out. Why should we, it's the comfort zone, life is good, life is easy. You found a routine you just got used to. So what is the problem?

The problem comes from two things I have noticed. The first thing is people dream to much, if they dream at all. The second thing is that people complain. A majority of people don't live in this world, they just exist. They complain about how their world is not the world they want to be in. They find blame in everyone and everything else because of how easy it is to push to blame off of them. They are basically afraid of what they may see in the mirror.

They have forgotten how easy it is to start to live instead just existing. How many of your friends do you hear complain about their life. How many people do you hear talk about their dreams and how they wish . . . right before they go back to following the herd.

Do you even understand what goes into motivation. It can seem complicated. Whether internally or externally, motivation involves needs and resources, decision making, communication and feedback, power and influence. You may wonder how all of this may relate to each other. For right now that is not important. The important thing about motivation is having a goal. That is right, motivation begins with seeing what you want and going for it. We all have visions of what we want in life, no matter how exaggerated it may seem.

Emotional Shifting

I have learned, as humans, we will not move toward something unless there is an strong enough emotional shift within us which forces us to move. If whatever it is does not affect our emotional shift in either a negative or positive way, we will stay where we are. Sometimes people just forget what is it like to go a achieve. Some people are just afraid to succeed because the thought of failure is just to great. Their dream died before it even had a chance.

So where do you start? You start with a dream, a vision, a desire to achieve something you want. It doesn't matter what it is. It doesn't matter how far fetched it may sound. You just need to believe that is what you want. Once you have that vision, everything else will eventually fall into place. You do not need to know how you are going to achieve all this now. You will discover that as you journey down your path. You just need to know what you want or where you want to be in life.

Do not waste your time and wander aimlessly thinking of goals which are to vague. You need to chose goals which are sound, decisive and sharp. There is an enormous difference between a goal which says I want to be rich vice one which says I want earn $500,000.00 in two years. Which goal is more sound, which goal is more decisive. Which goal gets directly to the point and would be easier to achieve. You have to be careful what you ask for, you just may get it.

Are you aware of how much Life resembles a double edged sword. Life is full of complication and dangers but yet it is full of so many opportunities and rewards. For many people who choose to just exist in life, they see the complications and dangers in life. For those few who choose to see the opportunities and rewards in life, they are willing to take the chances. They believe the opportunities and rewards in life are worth the risks in the long run.

Four of Five Points

Once you have a general idea of a goal in mind, now what. There are five things you need to remember when achieving your goals. You first need to be focused. Without this you will not be able to achieve any of your goals. You will shoot from one idea to another, from one want to another want. This alone can undermine and start building negativity within and around you. You will soon feel as if you cannot accomplish anything in life. And you will fail. Make sure you understand what it is you want to achieve. Write it down and post it on the wall. Remind yourself everyday what it is you want to achieve. See it everyday, believe it everyday.

Life is not what you may consider perfect, nor is it constant. Life will throw you a fast ball when you don't have a glove to catch with. It will throw you a curve ball when you think you are ready. Because of this you need to be a flexible as possible when achieving your goal. You need to be willing to change course when necessary. Your circumstances will warrant what changes will be needed. Don't look at changing course as a setback or failure. Be aware and accept these things happen. Whether or not it is beyond your control, learn to live with it. Learn to adopt and overcome any changes.

If you want to survive in this game, you will need to ensure you have structured your approach toward your goal. This means you need to be organized. If you are like the many out there who have no clue what being organized is like, you have a long road ahead of you. The way you will approach your goals will depend on the uncertainties you encounter. If you are not organized you will eventually show a lack of decisiveness or commitment resulting from your failure to make a choice between alternatives. Do you see how being organized is directly related to being flexible.

There is only one way you will move forward toward your goal. You will need to work toward causing things to happen vice waiting for them to happen. I am talking about being PROACTIVE in working toward your goal. Move, get up and move. Your life doesn't start on Monday. It started when you became old enough to take control of your life. Go out there and get what you want. When you are proactive, you will have more control over the situation you are creating.

OK, let me summarize what I just went over. Once you are able to control the situation as best as possible, you will be able to make the best sound decision possible. Your decisions will be based on the options presented to you, depending on your circumstances. You will not have a problem making a decision because you have created a structured approach. Even if the unforeseen arises, you will be able to adopt and overcome any challenges. And all of this will happen because you are determined and driven to achieve what you want.

Deciding Point Factor

The last point, which I believe is the most important point, is maintaining a positive outlook. In everything you do, period. A positive oulook will provide you with a send of security and self-assurance. Work to remove any negativity from your lexicon, your thought process, and from your life. Removing these negative aspects in your life will prevent you from undermining yourself. I believe surrounding your self with negativity is the number one reason people never get a chance to finish achieving their goals. The negativity builds up within and around them, and they fail.

Negative Environments

Being a motivator is not an easy job with all the negativity which surrounds us. No matter how prosperous you may be. No matter how good your life has improved compared to five, ten or even twenty years ago, you will always find many vehicles of negativity finding its way to you. I believe the largest vehicles of negativity are the news media and television. I believe what makes these to vehicles so negative is due to the amount of attention we pay to them.

I believe, without changing any of the current programming, if you reduced your access time to these vehicles, you will feel your life improve. Whether it actually did or didn't, you will feel a difference. I should know, it did for me. And because of this, I hardly watch TV, or pay much attention to the news media. I have learned over the years how to stay up to date with the events happening around me. If the news is really important, if will find a way to you. Everything else is just relative. You will find most of the news will not have a direct impact in your life. Improve your chances of succeeding in life by working on reducing access to these two vehicles.

Take Control

Why should you let someone else control how you feel. Why should you give them the power to determine how you live your life. Your life is yours to do what you wish. For many of you, learn to start living. Learn to start thinking for yourself again.

Many of you may not believe you live in a beautiful world, but you do. Many of you may not believe you live in a country which possesses the most abundance and wealth in human history, but you do. You are the only one preventing you from achieving your goals. So what are you going to do.
